Great Place Falkirk Online Events

Great Place Falkirk is excited to bring you two online events in March 2021. During the lockdown period, we stayed true to our mission, to raise awareness around the rich heritage of the Falkirk area, and celebrate the local stories and community knowledge, shifting our focus towards digital engagement and developing online resources. For over a year now, we’ve been providing an array of digital programmes for the Falkirk area. Follow us on social media and discover our digital opportunities from online research groups, and heritage networking events, to our fun online competitions and events. If you are interested in local history, and the heritage of the Falkirk area, you may also visit our website (www.ourstoriesfalkirk.com) or download our app Falkirk Explored, available for free for iOS and Android phones.

Our Stories Falkirk (with guest artist Burd Ellen)

12 March 2021, 7pm

Great Place invites you to an online storytelling evening, infused with the spellbinding music of Burd Ellen. From Medieval battles, to the travelling stories of the drovers of the Falkirk Tryst, and the mythical Kelpies, the Falkirk area is rich with story. Grab a warm cuppa and join us for a cosy evening, exploring tales of history and folklore, in the company of the acclaimed storytellers and folk performers.

Margaret Bennett, is an internationally distinguished folklorist, singer and writer from the Isle of Skye. Margaret will be sharing stories about the Falkirk Tryst and the travels of the highland drovers.

Bairns Night

26 March 2021, 7pm

 Bairn: /bern/, /bɛrn/

  • A child or baby.
  • A native of Falkirk. As in the old saying: 'Better meddle wi' the Devil, than the Bairns of Falkirk'

What does it mean to be a Bairn? We’ve invited a colourful bunch of local writers and artists to share their thoughts and memories from growing up in the Falkirk area, and help us weave together the tapestry of Falkirk life. Join us and discover different aspects of life in Falkirk, through anecdotes, poems, songs and stories.

The event features playwright and novelist, Alan Bissett, musician and filmmaker Adam Stafford, novelist Helen MacKinven, and short story writer Paul Cowan. Along with our established guests, we will also be introducing the winners of our Short Story competition ‘500 Words for Falkirk’, some of whom will be sharing their stories with the public for the very first time. So come on ye bairns!
